How to Use This Grade Calculator

This calculator has three modes. Weighted Grade calculates your current class grade based on individual assignments, tests, and quizzes with different weights. Grade Needed tells you exactly what score you need on remaining work to hit your target final grade. Grade Converter converts any percentage to a letter grade and GPA points instantly.

How to Calculate a Weighted Grade

A weighted grade gives different assignments different levels of importance based on their weight in your final grade. For example, if your final exam is worth 40% of your grade and your homework is worth 10% a perfect score on homework cannot make up for a poor exam score.

To calculate a weighted grade, multiply each assignment grade by its weight expressed as a decimal then add all the results together. If weights add up to 100% the result is your final grade percentage.

Example — if you scored 85% on homework worth 20% and 78% on the midterm worth 40% and 91% on quizzes worth 15% your weighted contribution from these three categories is 85 times 0.20 plus 78 times 0.40 plus 91 times 0.15 which equals 17 plus 31.2 plus 13.65 equaling 61.85 out of the 75% of your grade covered so far.

The Standard US Grading Scale

Most US colleges and high schools use a variation of the following grading scale:

A+ is 97 to 100 percent and equals 4.0 GPA points

A is 93 to 96 percent and equals 4.0 GPA points

A- is 90 to 92 percent and equals 3.7 GPA points

B+ is 87 to 89 percent and equals 3.3 GPA points

B is 83 to 86 percent and equals 3.0 GPA points

B- is 80 to 82 percent and equals 2.7 GPA points

C+ is 77 to 79 percent and equals 2.3 GPA points

C is 73 to 76 percent and equals 2.0 GPA points

C- is 70 to 72 percent and equals 1.7 GPA points

D is 60 to 69 percent and equals 1.0 GPA points

F is below 60 percent and equals 0.0 GPA points

Some institutions use a plus or minus scale while others only use whole letter grades. Always check your syllabus for your specific course grading scale.

How to Find Out What Grade You Need

If you know your current grade and the weight of remaining assignments, you can calculate exactly what score you need to reach your target using this formula:

Grade Needed = (Target Grade - Current Grade multiplied by Current Weight) divided by Remaining Weight

For example if your current grade is 82% based on 60% of the course weight and you want a 90% final grade with 40% of the course remaining you need a 90 minus 82 times 0.60 divided by 0.40 which equals 90 minus 49.2 divided by 0.40 which equals 102% — meaning a 90% is no longer achievable even with a perfect score on remaining work.

This calculation is critical for realistic goal setting as the semester progresses.

Tips for Improving Your Grade

Focus on high-weight assignments first. A 10-point improvement on a 40% weighted final exam impacts your grade four times more than the same improvement on a 10% weighted quiz.

Visit office hours. Studies consistently show that students who visit professor office hours perform 0.5 to 1.0 grade points higher than those who do not. Most professors appreciate engaged students and will often provide hints about exam content.

Work backward from your goal. Use this calculator to see what you need on each remaining assignment then plan your study time accordingly rather than studying everything equally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a weighted and unweighted grade?

An unweighted grade treats every assignment equally regardless of its designated importance. A weighted grade assigns different percentages to different assignment categories so that more important assessments like final exams count more toward your final grade than minor assignments like participation.

What happens if my weights do not add up to 100%?

If the weights you enter do not total 100% the calculator will flag this and calculate based on the weights provided. If only some of your grades are entered the result shows your current standing based on completed work only — not your projected final grade.

What GPA do I need to maintain my scholarship?

Most merit scholarships require a minimum cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 though competitive scholarships may require 3.5 or higher. Check your specific scholarship requirements as they vary widely.

Can I calculate my grade if I do not know all the weights?

If weights are not listed on your syllabus treat all assignments as equal weight — enter the same weight for each one and the calculator will give you a simple average of your scores.

Results use the most common US grading scale. Individual institutions may use different cutoffs. Always verify with your specific course syllabus.
